Automatic upgrades functionality is now available for Linux, MacOS and Windows service installation in preview. Get it now from the Downloads beta page.
Autmatic upgrades will follow the specific release track you are currently on. So stable releases will only upgrade to the next stable release, while the beta releases will only download the next beta releases etc...
The 2.3.1 release cycle is very close to an end so just expect a single release candidate shortly before the stable release to come out hopefully later this week.
