Account hijacking protection now enabled by default for all Underscore Backup users including the free tier

Any account on Underscore Backup now has account hijacking protection enabled by default. What this entails is that certain high-risk operations now require that all active backups need to be turned off for a default of 3 days (Configurable between 0 and 7). This means that if your online account was compromised you would also need to turn off all your running backups before an attacker will be able to assume control of your account.

The operations that are as of now deemed critical to your account and require a certain amount of backup inactivity are.

  • Deleting your account.
  • Changing the email tied to the account.
  • Loosening of the hijacking protection settings.
  • Deleting a source (Only requires the specific source to be deleted to be paused).

You can also optionally limit the private key recovery feature in the same way however this feature is not enabled by default since it would increase the Restore Time Object in the case where the private key password is lost.

You can change the account inactivity settings by going to the Danger tab in your account settings as illustrated in the screenshot below.

New stable release out with automatic upgrades and big reduction in size of local repository.

Now has the ability to automatically update to new updates automatically in most installation types (Single exception is Windows user level installation).

Also new is that the application will maintain a stable configuration URL between launches if possible. Also switched back to MapDB from LMDB for local repository metadata. It is slightly slower, but uses 5 times less storage and anecdotally seem to have higher durability.

The release also contains many bugfixes and minor improvements, too numerous to list here.

Get it now from the downloads page.

Automatic upgrades now available as preview

Automatic upgrades functionality is now available for Linux, MacOS and Windows service installation in preview. Get it now from the Downloads beta page.

Autmatic upgrades will follow the specific release track you are currently on. So stable releases will only upgrade to the next stable release, while the beta releases will only download the next beta releases etc...

The 2.3.1 release cycle is very close to an end so just expect a single release candidate shortly before the stable release to come out hopefully later this week.
